You are writing 'chunks' as part of exam essays.
TASK 1
Read Kevin Maher (The Times film critic) on Trolls World Tour (Universal).
Use the case study to respond to the following 2 exam essays separately, so 2 paragraphs. Keep each to three
or four crisp, factual sentences. Bonus points: refer to Netflix, disruption, your own film consumption.
Essay question 1: How far has digital technology changed
patterns of distribution? (2015)
- Matt Smith OF THE FDA, how trailers and clips are shown on screen to fit a phone
- streaming services are more accessible , Netflix , this means that more distribution will be done online as
consumers are online more and will see distribution more online
- Universal receive back lash for releasing Trolls World tour offering it to home media, despite
backlash Universal have ignored it and released a new film anyways
-Digital technology has changed distribution. Universal released trolls straight to home media,
cinema exhibitors were angry about Universal's release of Trolls straight to home media, and
even more cross when Universal than released The High Note in the same way. Cineworld
amongst others is threatening to ban Universal films.
-Mayer suggests that if big Hollywood studios realise their blockbuster straight into consumers home then
it could "signify the end of cinema-going".
-Universal's home media release of Trolls as an example and consider whether this is a trend
-Universal's home media release of Trolls as an example and consider whether this is a trend
(in studio behaviour) with studios copying the disruptive model of Netflix
-Streaming services such as Netflix has caused a huge interference as it is more accessible for consumers.
-Streaming services such as Netflix has caused a huge interference as it is more accessible for consumers.
Matt Smith from the FDA mentions, movie trailers are being cut into mobile format (making it quick and easy
for consumers to watch trailers on their digital device) and the spend on digital has increased
Digital technology has changed distribution greatly, Matt Smith of the FDA stated "the spend on
digital has increased incredibly over the years", he also talked about how distributors adapted
to this change such as "trailers are designed to be portrait" this is to fit to the phone. Streaming
services have also shown to be forever growing as they accessible and quick for the consumer
to use, although some may say this has changed the film industry greatly and not in a positive
way always as Netflix has been scene to have caused a huge disruption within the film industry.
Theatrical runs were cut short in March due to current events of COVID19, Universal received
heavy backlash for the release of Trolls World tour offering it to home media, despite the
backlash after this release Universal ignored it and released new films anyways. This links to
Mayer's argument that if the big Hollywood studios begin to release their film straight to home
media this could "signify the end of cinema-going".
Use Universal's home media release of Trolls as an example and consider whether this is a trend
(in studio behaviour) with studios copying the disruptive model of Netflix
